Personality
Robert's view on the Templar code deeply coincides with his own beliefs and his stance on his religion. True freedom is never free, there always has to be a code that governs it; and nothing happens without paying a price. As such, he dislikes the Assassins on principle - they are merely an obstacle on the path to making the world a better place. (Without order, freedom is chaotic; unruly.)
He's always had a serious outlook on life, but since his demotion he has become more stoic and silent. Swearing himself to celibacy, he now punishes himself for having perverted thoughts or ogling at women. (But the right woman may yet convince him to change his mind!) He takes his duties seriously, but now doubts he will ever assume a position of leadership, however he will perform any task that is asked of him.
He has never been a sentimental person, and has never held much in the importance of personal possessions. The only things he really treasures are a silver bracelet that belonged to his mother, his armour, his weapons, and his rosary beads.
Biography
Born in a small fishing village in Lancashire, Robert's father was an abusive man who often beat his mother. Since he was young his mother taught him about God, and prayer. He prayed and prayed for his father to go away, but he never did. Still, he didn't give up hope.
One evening he witnessed the man beating his mother again, when a group of passing Templars crashed down the door and cut him down. But by then, it was already too late - she suffered multiple fractures and died of blood loss and a punctured lung. Taking pity on the now orphaned boy, the Templar captain brought him to a nearby abbey, where he was brought up by the nuns.
At age 14, the Templar captain returned to take Robert away, to train him as a warrior. Robert was taught to fight with all manner of weapon, but he favoured the sword and shield. He trained daily, studied diligently, and prayed every morning and night. He took a pragmatic approach to the way his prayers were answered - in return for his father being dead, his mother had to pay the price for his freedom. He grieved for the loss of his mother, but he understood why it had to happen and was still thankful to God for the fact he was able to lead a better life.
As a skilled warrior and pious in the order, he was on track to becoming promoted to captain and command his own squadron. But before he received his promotion, he was caught with his pants down with a painted whore in his bed. Disgraced, he was demoted and reassigned to Constantinople, serving as a door guard to a minor temple. It has been six years since then, and he's still waiting for an opportunity to shine.
